Peabody, George
(1795–1869).

Comerciante y financista estadounidense. Nació en South Danvers, Mass. (ciudad que fue rebautizada en su honor como Peabody). Amasó tempranamente una fortuna como socio de una empresa mayorista del confecciones y como presidente de Eastern Railroad (desde 1836). En un viaje a Inglaterra negoció un préstamo por US$8 millones para el estado de Maryland que casi estaba en la bancarrota. En 1837 se mudó en forma permanente a Londres y fundó un banco de inversiones especialista en operaciones de cambio de divisas. Sus transacciones bancarias contribuyeron a establecer el crédito de EE.UU. en el extranjero. Peabody gastó la mayor parte de su fortuna en actividades filantrópicas destinadas a promover la educación y las artes. Algunas de sus donaciones son el museo de historia natural de la Universidad de Yale y el museo arqueológico de Harvard.
